An apprenticeship is a real opportunity for a young person to gain recognised qualifications and become a fully skilled employee who adds real value to a company’s workforce.

We recognise that a successful apprenticeship requires the support of BTAL and the member company, as well as a positive and responsible attitude from the apprentice.

At BTAL we have developed the following guidelines that should be used from the start of an apprenticeship to ensure that each party fully understands their responsibilities to ensure a successful apprenticeship for all concerned.

 

Responsibility of the Apprentice

  • Work safely at all times and comply with company and legislative requirements
  • Attend work promptly and consistently
  • Attend college promptly and consistently ensuring all assignments are submitted
  • Co-operate and work with their adviser /assessor to develop appropriate assessment plans
  • Gather and collate evidence of their competencies and complete the candidate book and portfolio as required
  • Demonstrate achievement of all requirements as devised and agreed with their adviser/assessor
  • Make all materials available for inspection by authorised personnel at any time. For example their BTAL Training Adviser, Awarding Body External Verifier or a Learning and Skills Council Representative
  • Comply with the employment terms and conditions of the Employer
  • Adhere to the Provider and College terms and conditions as appropriate
  • Take ownership for their own learning

Responsibility of the Company

  • Maintain a safe learning environment that complies with the relevant statutory requirements to ensure the health, safety and welfare of apprentices
  • Work with BTAL to enable the delivery and achievement of training to the prescribed criteria
  • Agree to a learning plan to enable the delivery and achievement of training to the prescribed criteria
  • Provide adequate resources to enable apprentices to access vocational training and/or education, as appropriate, to enable achievement of the agreed learning plan
  • Co-operate with BTAL in the review of apprentice progress and in the identification /implementation of corrective/preventative actions as appropriate
  • Actively promote the value of the apprenticeship within the organisation
  • Ensure that other staff are aware of the requirements and needs of the apprentice
  • Play an active role in the recruitment of suitable apprentices
  • Employ and pay the apprentice in accordance with agreed terms and conditions of employment
  • Ensure compliance with current Equal Opportunities polices and legislation

Responsibility of BTAL

  • Manage appropriate apprentice learning programmes to nationally recognised Quality Standards
  • Liaise and co-ordinate between all parties. For example Apprentice, Employer and College to achieve the agreed learning criteria
  • Ensure all aspects of the learning programme are delivered to the Awarding Body, Learning and Skills Council and the Adult Learning Inspectorate standards
  • Identify and agree suitable programmes to meet the specific needs of the Employer and the Apprentice
  • Assist in the selection of suitable young people for apprentice positions through career centres and initial assessment activities
  • Ensure all employees involved in the delivery of learning programmes understand the specific requirements of the individual apprentice
  • Ensure that all aspects of the learning programme are integrated to enable a coherent development experience for the apprentice
  • Ensure that learning is undertaken in a safe and healthy environment that complies with current statutory requirements
  • Promote the safe learner concept
  • Ensure that learning is undertaken with due regard to equality of opportunity and diversity
  • Maintain Assessment Centre status to enable delivery of nationally recognised qualifications
  • Provide advice, support, assessment and verification for apprentices
