Entry requirements

GCSE grade D or above in Mathematics, English Language and a Science based subject.

Relevant NVQ, GNVQ subjects will also be considered.

What does Light Vehicle Technician work involve?

The repair and servicing of cars and light vans which may include the following:

  • Electrical &electronic systems
  • Battery, charging &starter systems
  • Engine management systems
  • Air supply &exhaust systems
  • Ignition systems
  • Engine testing
  • Engine lubrication
  • Fuel systems
  • Parts &ordering systems

What does Heavy Vehicle Technician work involve?

  • Electrical &electronic systems
  • Battery, charging &starter systems
  • Engine management systems
  • Chassis and suspensions
  • Engine testing
  • Engine lubrication
  • Fuel systems

What does Vehicle Body Repair work involve?

  • Repairing &replacing body panels
  • Alignment of vehicle chassis following accident damage
  • Welding new panels to vehicle bodies
  • Manufacturers standards

What does Vehicle Body Re-finishing (Paint) work involve?

  • The application of paint to vehicle surfaces
  • Knowledge of modern paint technology
  • Application of different paint finishes
  • Preparation of vehicle surfaces

The Training Programme

  • The programmes generally range from two to four years, which consists of both in-company and off-site training with assessment and attendance at college for further educational purposes
  • Further education is generally undertaken at Keighley College or Lancaster Training although other venues can be used to meet the needs and location of the individual
  • Attendance at college is day release but the first year may contain block release depending on the programme requirements.

  • Technical Certificate for knowledge and understanding
  • Key Skills in Information Technology, Application of Number and Communications
  • Possible additional qualifications relevant to your work
  • Advanced Apprenticeship certificate or Foundation Apprenticeship certificate depending on the level of course you follow
