Mechanical Engineering Apprenticeship
Entry requirements
GCSE grade D or above in Mathematics, English Language and a Science based subject. Engineering would be an advantage.
Relevant NVQ, GNVQ subjects will also be considered.
What does Mechanical Engineering work involve
- The design and development of new machines, tools and systems (CAD)
- The manufacture of machines, tools and components (Machining)
- Fault finding and repair of machinery, tools and systems (Maintenance)
- Building machinery and production systems(Fitting & Assembly)
- Inspecting and Testing of manufactured products (Quality Control)

The Training Programme
- The programme is generally four years which consists of both in-company and off-site training with assessment and attendance at college for further educational elements
- Further education is at either Keighley, Bradford, Lancaster, Coventry, Burnley or Leeds College
- Attendance at college is day release but the first year may contain block release depending on the company which employs you
The Qualifications Outcome
- NVQ levels 2 & 3 in Mechanical Engineering (machining, maintenance, fitting or assembly)
- BTEC Ordinary National Certificate (ONC) or relevant City and Guilds Awards
- Key Skills in Information Technology, Application of Number and Communications
- Possibility of additional qualifications relevant to your work, such as CAD, Abrasive Wheels, Health & Safety Qualifications
- Possible progression to Higher National Certificate (HNC) or Degree
